Before and After
The Melody Lounge in LA's Chinatown is defined by infinite lanterns in the 'sky' above. The illusion is achieved with mirrored walls above a rich variety of wall panels.
A view toward the bar. This image highlights the optical illusion of infinite lanterns
LA Magazine Story

Custom wall sconces illuminate the cushioned seating area
An intimate alcove is tucked into the side of the black marble DJ table
A view toward the bar and menu boards
Custom Laser cut light fixtures from local fabricatory Sector Xero are prominently featured in the Melody Lounge.
This fixture is mounted on our custom printed copper wall panels.
We designed custom tables based on original Chinese screens, with glass sided 'briefcase' display areas as the tabletop.

MELODY LOUNGE

939 N. Hill St. Los Angeles, CA (Chinatown)

(Opened in May 2013)

This is the basic floor plan of the yoga studio, with a retail space in front, the rainforest hallway formed by the Live Wall leading to the rest/changing rooms. The studio itself is at the heart of it all.
This is the very first render we made and shows the view of the Live Wall from the check-in desk. This 'jungle' environment provides seating and lots of cubby storage for patrons of the yoga studio, with air plants integrated into the undulating wall. The hall serves as a decompression chamber, linking the serene and peaceful studio itself with its gritty urban location in the heart of LA's Little Tokyo.
A progress shot as we model the Live Wall for YogaRIOT. Complete with a little plan diagram to orient the views. The blue segments have a bench at the bottom. The 'V's in section will house linear planters spilling over with air plants.
This wall of wooden ribs every foot divides the yoga studio itself from the hall leading to it, with the ceiling rising to 20'. The undulations in the wall form troughs which are full of plants.
A screen shot from when we started modelling the design. This image illustrates the simple construction of the wall ribs.

The defining view of the SPAradise project, a view down the hallway through the golden Thai arch.

The ceiling is made out of two tiers of bamboo mats, each separately lit (and dimmable) with LED lights.
The SPAradise storefront, with a custom sign we had fabricated at 1028 Designs

Hand painted reclaimed doors roll away to reveal the individual rooms. The double room doors came with broken glass panels which we replaced with honeycomb from the aerospace industry. We placed mirror-like gold mylar behind the honeycomb to create an eye-grabbing interactive mirror in the middle of the hall.

On the right side you can see a service light shining through burlap fabric. When turned off, the bright service lights blend invisibly into the burlap ceiling panels.

A single massage room. Light recess repeats the Thai arch pattern, with brass edging along all the edges creating a glow effect.
Each massage room and the reception desk have decorative arches set into the walls, with LEDs tucked inside. The edges are finished with custom fit polished brass strips on the edges. The rear panels are stretched fabric.
The custom marble reception desk, as viewed from the waiting area. A glass door hangs in a golden Thai arch and leads down the hall and toward the massage rooms.
The SPAradise lobby, as viewed from behind the reception desk.
A detail shot of the golden Thai arch, with frameless glass door and bamboo ceiling beyond.
The first thing one sees upon entering SPAradise.
Looking from one double room into the other across the hall. The floor is waxed epoxy; a combination of three colors, including two metallic ones. The clients applied it themselves!
